Why Kakamega
The eastern edge of the Congo Basin
Kakamega is the only surviving patch of equatorial rainforest in Kenya — the eastern fragment of the great Congo Basin forest. Inside: over 330 bird species, rare primates, giant fig trees, medicinal plants and trails that have changed very little in centuries.
It's about 45 minutes from Kisumu. Most visitors rush through in a day. The ones who slow down — who spend a morning tracking birds before the tour groups arrive — come back changed.

Comfort, a spa and easy access back to Kisumu
Most visitors stay in basic guesthouses near the park gate — fine for a single night. If you want good food, a spa to rest in after the forest and the option to add the lake, the retreat is the better choice.
